Capping sand for fish tanks - 12 ounce bag of very fine yellow river sand mesh #90. This is a pure natural quartz sand. It is kiln dried, clean and virtually dust free. It is a natural material so the granules will vary slightly in color. The overall color is a pleasant cream-yellow. It is very smooth to the touch.
Recommendations for capping a fish tank substrate: a 1/2" layer thickness is sufficient as this sand is very fine. Place it directly over the main substrate layer such as gravel, soil, etc. to create a barrier layer between the substrate and the water column. When cleaning the tank, try not to disturb your main substrate layer. Just gently vacuum this top layer of sand. Fish such as delicate barbed bottom dwellers will especially appreciate the softness of this sand.
It is pure natural quartz sand and can also be used in sand art and craft projects, filling hourglasses, pin cushions, and casting sculptures and small containers that need to have a very fine surface finish. It will not affect the surface texture or color of the finished product, such as a concrete planter.
About sand meshes:
The mesh number indicates how fine or coarse a sand is. The lower the #, the coarser the sand is. For example, mesh #16 is very coarse sand (2 mm grain diameter). Mesh #30 is around <1.0 - 1.5 mm; Mesh 60 is <1 mm; Mesh #90 is almost like sand flour, with grains so tiny they're nearly invisible to the naked eye.
