Description
original OOAK advertising artwork 1881 umbrella company.Created by engravers Caughlan & Berry in 1881 this is a piece if advertising ephemera that is 140 years old. This original piece of art was entirely hand drawn in pen and ink. With amazing detail, this piece shows a possible logo for an umbrella company, Isaac Smith’s Son & Co. as an open umbrella, shielding an amazing landscape of mountains, river and deer. Above this is a muscled
arm holding a hammer with the words “Trade Mark”
This piece is in amazing condition given its age. There is some discoloration to the bottom of the card and a doodle of the arm and hammer. On the back is written:
“This is property of Caughlan & Berry and must be returned within 12 days” dated Aug 15th/81
Caughlan & Berry were an engraver in NYC. It is amazing to realize that this was entirely hand drawn with mechanical instruments.
