    Description

About ten years ago, I purchased a sample book of Wantage Recorder broadside ads for auctions, sample invoices and stationery, clam bakes, department store sales and the like. In it were a number of broadside advertisements that were current at the time the book was assembled. It was used to show prospective advertisers what a possible ad could look like. The only reason these ads survived is that they were in a book for over 100 years. Broadsides were intended to have a life of a few days or a couple weeks at most. They are printed on newsprint type paper. All of the broadsides have minor tears at the fold points from being unfolded numerous times. Also, these broadsides were glued into the book, so, in most cases the only way I could get them out was to cut around the glue areas leaving a piece of paper attached to the rear. This does not detract from the content on the front. They look great when framed. The Wantage Recorder was a newspaper in northwestern NJ (Deckertown/Sussex) that operated from 1894 to 1943.
This broadside dated 1904 announces a sale at Fienbloom's Clothing Store in Hamburg NJ. The ad is split top and bottom at the vertical fold line but when mounted this damage will not be visible. The broadside measures 10 3/4" by 17 1/2".
